COMPETITION RULES – GENERAL
a) There are two classes for the Annual Exhibition and Quarterly Competitions – Intermediate or Open. Members may select which one to enter for BOTH prints and digitally projected images (DPIs). Subsequent changes can only take place at the beginning of each competition year.
a) Prints or DPIs may be used once in the Annual Exhibition and once in the Frank Thomas Trophy (prints) or A.P. Trophy (DPIs). They may also be used twice in the Quarterly Competition, subject to rule (5) below.
b) Prints and DPIs may, of course, be used in ad hoc events as well as the above-mentioned major internal competitions.
c) It is suggested that members should write in pencil, the date and competition on the reverse side of their print. This will assist the Competition & Exhibition Secretary. Both prints and DPIs must ONLY bear the entrant’s competition number – NOT the name and address.
COMPETITION RULES - QUARTERLY
Each entrant may submit up to 3 images, although number 3 may be removed if there are too many to view on the day.
All types of image (Colour/Monochrome/Derivative etc) are acceptable so long as they have not been used in other internal competitions - subject to b) above.
Each photographer must own the copyright of every element of the image. Clip Art, Copyright-Free Material and Fractals are not acceptable.
Prints
Prints may be of any size with mounts from 30 x 25cm up to and including 50 x 40cm maximum. For Panorama prints ONLY – a mount size of 70 x 35cm is allowed.
Digitally Projected Images
1a Will be projected in a landscape format, 1400pixels by 1050pixels. Portrait images should be no larger than 1050pixels high.
1b Must be in TIFF (.tiff) and sRGB colour space format. The increased size of TIFF compared with JPEG means that ENTRIES MUST be submitted on DISK not email.
2 Files must be named as follows: Title_Competitor Number_2 or 3 initials eg spring fever_82_hv.tiff.
Entries that do not conform to all these requirements will be rejected.
General
1 A member may enter up to three prints and three DPI in each competition. Prints and DPI will be judged separately.
2 Each print and DPI will be viewed and a FIRST, SECOND and THIRD selected, together with any Highly Commended or Commended the Judge considers worthy in each class. Every entrant will receive one mark (irrespective of the number of entries). Additionally, FIRST will gain 5 marks, SECOND 4, THIRD 3, HC’s 2 and C’s 1. Marks will be accumulated throughout the four rounds of the competition.
3 Prints and DPI must show the member’s Competition number ONLY. An Entry Form must be completed with the member’s name, Competition number and titles. This should be handed to the Competition/Exhibition Secretary with the entry.
4 Prints and DPI must not be more than two years old from the date of the first showing at the Society.
5 Entries not receiving a placing, HC or C may be entered in one further Quarterly competition, but not the following one.
ANNUAL EXHIBITION RULES
1 The Exhibition will be open to members of the Society and all entries must be the work of the member. However, trade-processed prints are eligible without being specified as such.
2 Open Class – all prints and DPI will be judged in a single section and the following awards made:

Best Portrait/Figure Study Print
Best Pictorial Print
Best Record/Applied/Nature Print
Best Portrait/Figure Study DPI
Best Pictorial DPI
Best Record/Applied/Nature DPI
3 Intermediate Class – all prints and DPIs will be judged in a single section and the following awards made:
Best overall Print
Best Monochrome Print
Best Colour Print
Best overall DPI
4. In addition, irrespective of Class, the Bennett-Salanson Bowl will be awarded to the Best Print in the Exhibition and the Frank Scroggs Memorial Trophy to the Best DPI in the Exhibition.
5. It is hoped that a Member winning the Premier award in the Intermediate Class would promote themselves into the Open Class for the next Competition year.
6. A maximum of 9 prints and 9 DPIs per member can be entered. An entry form must be completed with the member’s name, competition number and titles – this to be handed to the Competition/Exhibition Secretary with the entry.
7. Prints and DPIs entered in previous Annual Exhibitions are not eligible, except in a higher Class, ie a print or DPI winning an award in the Intermediate Class may be entered the following year in the Open Class.
8. Prints may be any size with mounts from 30 x 25cm up to and including 50x40cm maximum. For Panorama prints ONLY – a mount size of 70x35cm is allowed. DPIs to be 1400x1050 pixels landscape, maximum 1050 high if portrait and all TIFF files.
9. All prints must be marked on the reverse side with the member’s competition number ONLY and a title to assist identification. In addition, prints must be marked 1 – 9 as in the event of an excessively large entry it may be necessary to reduce the quantity of prints displayed. The higher number print(s) from each entrant, unless receiving an award, will be withheld.
10. DPIs should be sized 1400 x 1050, and titled. A list of titles for the prints and DPIs MUST be handed to the Exhibition Secretary with your entry.
FRANK THOMAS (FT) TROPHY COMPETITION
1. This competition is for a related set of THREE prints. Members may enter up to three sets.
2. Prints may be any size with mounts from 30x25cm up to and including 50 x 40cm maximum. For Panorama prints ONLY – a mount size of 70x35cm is allowed.
3. Prints entered in previous FT Trophy Competitions will not be eligible and should not be more than two years old from the date of the first showing at the Society.
4. Each set of prints must have a SET TITLE. Each print must show only the competitor’s number and display position (Left – Centre – Right). A print title is optional.
5. The member, who in the opinion of the Judge submits the best set of related prints, will be awarded the Trophy, which will be engraved and held for one year.
ANDY & PAULINE ZENA (AP) TROPHY COMPETITION
This competition is for a related set of THREE DPIs. Members may enter up to three sets. The general conditions of the Frank Thomas Trophy apply to this competition also, but for “prints” read “DPIs”
CREATIVE COMPETITION
During the year, the Judges of all competitive events are asked to nominate entries, which in their opinion fall into the Creative category. The member, who during the competition year has accumulated the most nominations for creative prints and/or DPIs, will be awarded the Trophy, which will be held for one year.
AV COMPETITION
The author can express an idea, a reflection, tell a story or illustrate a song. There is freedom of expression for subject matter. The selected format should be digital AV sequences, with still images – no Video - and a soundtrack. Everything will be presented on a CD, DVD or USB memory drive
The digital AV sequences must be executable files (eg Pictures to Exe, ProShow Gold, QuickTime Movie and others) or in the following file formats – Shockwave (.swf) MPEG4, .avi or .mov. Each entrant will be allowed a total of 8 minutes and a maximum of 3 AVs. Jpeg images, with a maximum size of 1024 wide by 768, or in wide screen format 1920x1080, pixels high. Entries must include a soundtrack, usually recorded in the .wav or mp3 format.
The images used in the sequences should be the work of the entrant but some third-party images will be acceptable if they help to enhance the story being told – for example, archive material. The individual images used in a sequence can be of any age. Entries must be clearly marked with the entrant’s name, number of sequences and Competitor Number. Entries need to be handed in to the Competition & Exhibition Secretary at least one week before the competition date in order that they can be checked on the presentation computer to ensure there are no difficulties in playing the sequences Judges will either be an ‘in-house’ panel of three or an external judge. NOTE - It is the responsibility of the entrant to determine their need for any necessary music performance licences and, if necessary, to obtain them.
