Skittles Night & 60th birthday party

An evening of fun for members, their spouses and friends, playing some ‘ends’ of skittles and celebrate our first 60 years. If you can put a team of six together, so much the better, if not, don’t worry it’s not a league as it’s a time for fun and we can always put people into teams. Members from some other photographic clubs will be joining us and, no doubt, there will an element of friendly competition!

Tom Stoddart Hon FRPS

Tom Stoddart was born in Morpeth and is arguably the finest British photojournalist of his generation. His "Edge of Madness" exhibition and publication was the result of four years documenting the daily lives of Sarajevo citizens. He has won a number of photographic awards including the General News section of the 1995 Work Press Photo Awards and in 1997 he received the Care International Award for Humanitarian Reportage.

Tom Stoddart began his photographic career on a local newspaper in his native North-East of England. In 1978 he moved to London and began working freelance for publications such as The Sunday Times and Time Magazine.

During a long and varied career he has witnessed such international events on the war in Lebanon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the election of President Nelson Mandala, the bloody siege of Sarajevo and the wars against Saddam Hussain in Iraq. In 1977, Tony Blair gave Tom Stoddart exclusive behind the scenes access to his election campaign, as Labour swept to victory after 18 years of Conservative government. His recent extensive work on the catastrophic AIDS pandemic blighting Africa has been widely published and exhibited.

Now established as one of the worlds most respected photojournalists, Tom Stoddart is represented by, and works closely with Getty Images, to produce powerful photo essays on the serious world issues of our time.

For more information on Tom Stoddart, see his website click here.

Lecture title - iWITNESS
iWITNESS, is the title of Tom’s book and from where most of the images he will show will come. These demonstrate the consequences of Chernobyl in 2006, where children live with cancer. Tom says that it was very difficult because he need permission to go everywhere. The authorities are very careful and do not want photographers or journalists to be there. Today it’s more and more difficult to cover an event such as a war for the new photographic generation as they become a target. Also, they face becoming kidnapped because of the country they come from. 150 journalists were killed in last year.
